THE HISTORY OF
ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH

The story of St. George's Anglican Church starts in 1852, when Alexander Shirreff, one of the sons of the first settler, Charles Shirreff, donated land to the Anglican congregation. Construction began in 1857, when it was recorded that 1000 pounds would be required to erect a building. As the congregation had scraped up only a quarter of that amount, the prospects looked bleak. It is not surprising, therefore, that after two years little progress had taken place.

The records show that by 1863, the foundation with walls, but no roof, had taken shape at a recorded cost of $2000. There were no pews and no heat. It wasn't until 1872 that the building was considered complete, when it was consecrated on October 2nd.

Maintaining the building has been an intermittent affair. Major renovations were recorded in the 1950's and the church hall was added in 1968. But it was not until 1981 that a belfry and spire were erected. In its 135th anniversary year, 1988, other extensive repair and enhancement work was undertaken. Then in 2000, the original stained glass was cleaned and restored, rendering it in good shape for another hundred years. At the same time, the stone work on the weather-beaten building was re-pointed.
