About
the Parish of Fitzroy Harbour
Anglican worship has been active in this area for many years.
The Parish of Fitzroy Harbour is made up of two congregations. St. George's,
located in the village of Fitzroy Harbour, began services in 1863. Worship
at St. Thomas' began in 1882, however, this building was destroyed by fire. St.
Thomas' was re-built and consecrated in 1915. St. Thomas' is located in Woodlawn
approximately forty kilometers west of Ottawa.
St. Thomas' is set in a rural environment with members of the
congregation living in the countryside surrounding the church or in the nearby
communities of Constance Bay, Dunrobin or Shepherd's Grove. The
majority of St. George's congregation live in the village with the remaining
people living in the immediate rural area. Both congregations have many
families who have lived in this area for generations. Some are still
farming, some operate businesses in the area while many others work in Ottawa or
Arnprior. As the city of Ottawa continues to grow, more people are moving into
the area. With many new homes being built along the Ottawa River and
throughout the township, new concentrations of young families are moving into
the area.
Worship
Celebration of the Holy Eucharist alternates between
congregations every Sunday at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. There is a sung
Eucharist every Sunday using the Book of Alternate Services. Most hymns are sung
from the Book of Common Praise, however, some hymns of praise emanate from
"Fitzroy Sings", a compilation of more contemporary music. All
those baptized are welcome to receive communion.
Sunday School Program
The Sunday School program is an
vital aspect of our Parish.
Both parishes have active Sunday School programs run by an exceptional group of
Sunday School supervisors and teachers.
